METES & BOUNDS | 2023 -

Inspired by historical ecology, the series takes its name from an early land-mapping system that used natural landmarks, man-made markers, distances, and angles to define property boundaries. Set in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, the series captures mountain streams, ancient trees, chestnut split rails, headstones of the enslaved, and barbed wire—each revealing stories of colonial ambition, environmental transformation, and exploitation. These markers symbolize the settlers' drive to conquer and own the land, often at the expense of native ecosystems and peoples. The concept of "metes and bounds" is woven into America's historical fabric—shaped by events like the abolition of primogeniture and slavery, shifts in agricultural practices, and technological progress. These forces have created the intricate network of boundaries that define modern landscapes. My camera follows these lines, uncovering their hidden narratives. This work invites viewers to move beyond the surface beauty of the images and reflect on the boundaries that define and divide us—lines that carry deep stories of power, transformation, and identity. Metes & Bounds challenges us to reconsider how we inhabit and shape the spaces we call our own.
