MEET ROLAND HARTLEY
I am an emerging photo-based artist and alternative-process image-maker working in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, where I also raise grass-fed Piedmontese cattle. I studied at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York City, and my platinum-palladium and giclée prints have been included in a number of group exhibitions beginning in 2025.
My practice investigates how history and geography shape human emotion, settlement, and social structures. Drawing from historical ecology, I explore the ways landscapes encode power, memory, and belonging — and the ways communities have resisted those forces, claiming space and preserving what erasure would take. I am drawn to places where history is buried in plain sight and to places where it is kept deliberately alive: abandoned industrial corridors, forgotten burial grounds, and landscapes where ancient ways of life endure against the forces that would transform or erase them.
Documentary work includes the Browns Cove Digital Mapping Project, created with the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, where images from my series Metes & Bounds provide visual context to a digital map and historical StoryMaps site documenting an isolated Appalachian community.
These experiences continue to anchor my photography. I make images to uncover the hidden geographies of power and resistance that shape how we build, remember, belong, and live on the land.
